Getting Ready for Next Week 9-19-10

I Peter 1:1-12 Ephesians 1:3-14

What is significant about calling the believers strangers?
How is the inheritance described?
What insights into trials do you see?
Do you know fellow believers who are suffering because of their faith?
What can you do to encourage them?

9-12-10 Lesson/I Peter Background

How would you descibe Peter in 5 word or less?

Peter:
Became one of the twelve disciples
Was the spokesman of the twelve
Brought to Christ by his brother Andrew who also became one the twelve disciples
Christ renamed Peter, he was originally named Simon. His new name Peter meant Rock.
He was from Bethsaida
He was in the fishing business with his brother Andrew and also partners with James and John and their dad.
He was married and it seems his wife went with on his journeys
Peter was energetic, bold, impulsive.

He had his moments - good and not so good
Matt 16:13-19, Matt 16:21-23, Matt 14:22-31 - The walk on the water incident, Matt 17: 1-13 - The transfiguration, Matt 13:31-38, John 18:15-18 & John 18:25-27 John 21:15-17 - Jesus reinstates Peter,

Acts 1:15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers. Acts 2:14 Then Peter stood up ... and addressed the crowd Acts 3:1 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer-at three in the afternoon. Excerpts from some of this sermons or lessons Acts 3:16 By faith in the name of Jesus this man ... was made strong. Acts 3:19 Repent then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out , that time of refreshing may come from the Lord. Acts 4:10 ...It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead that this man stands before you healed.

The churches:

These churches were most likely started by Paul but it seems likely Peter had visited these churches
These church were in Asia Minor which is present day Turkey.
This letter was most likely written from Rome with "Babylon" being a code name for safety reasons
It was written about 67/68 A.D.
The churches were under great stress.

Let's Make 2010 A Crazy Year!

The Bible is full of stories that show crazy love in action. How crazy are you or do you want to be? We're beginning this year with a study called "Crazy Love" dealing with God's crazy love for us and how we can respond with crazy love for God and each other.

Book Intro:
Have you ever wondered if you're missing it? It's crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe—the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor—loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss.

Whether you've verbalized it yet or not we all know something's wrong.
Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn't working harder at a list of do's and don'ts-it's falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love you will never be the same.

Because when you're wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.
